Inside/Outside

After my return from a trip overseas, I realized that one of the most enjoyable things we did was to dine alfresco. Many of our best meals were eaten outside on a patio, in a garden or in the courtyard of a small cafe. Why don’t we do this more in the States? I know my Houston friends will tell me “it’s too hot”, but is it really? Spring and fall in most areas in the U.S. are perfect for outside dining.

Take the “inside” outside by creating an “outdoor room” in any location.  Your patio, front porch, side yard, back garden, poolside or even a driveway can become places to relax, dine or visit with friends. Think about how you want to use the space you have. Do you need seating, a table, lighting, an umbrella or potted plants? Remember to ensure that the overall style complements your home.

Small spaces are wonderful, just like this open bar as shown in One King Lane.  Even if you only have a small front entrance or a tiny patio garden, you can still find room for a bistro table and chair to transform that “space” into an inviting place to take a break with a good book.

Large backyards are great too. Utilize every inch of your real estate with a good design plan. It is easy to change ideas on paper.  It’s not so easy to move a swimming pool. Before starting any large project, ensure that your overall plan addresses as many of the items on your wish list as possible. Involve the family in creating a space that is fun and safe to enjoy year round.

The newest trend in exterior design is the large outdoor room. This space usually includes an outdoor kitchen for cooking and dining alfresco. Add a bar to serve guests or even an all-weather TV. The choices are endless and easy to find. This arrangement of outdoor furniture shown is by Pottery Barn. For more fun and relaxation consider swings, hammocks, swimming pools or fire-pits. Last but not least, remember that privacy, safety and protection from the elements as well as style are all important.

Enjoy!
