Cayman Island Home

Project Details

This Cayman Island Home was truly an international project with the client sharing his time between Jakarta, Houston, and the Cayman Islands. The architect, Wil Wiens, who lives and works in Toronto, is the owner’s very skilled son-in-law. At the request of the homeowner, he designed this seasonal home with a modern twist on the “Black and White Singapore House,” which occupies a unique position in the architectural history of South East Asia.

The “Singapore House” acknowledges the important legacy of the island’s colonial past, while also embracing the essence of that bygone era, recalling charmed lives of ease and elegance. These houses offer a sensible and ecologically-sound solution to the demands of designing for a tropical monsoon climate, perfect for the Cayman Islands.

After a successful commercial collaboration in Houston, the family asked Janus Design to work with them again to supervise construction and furnish their Cayman Island home. All items, including furniture, art, linens, dishes, and other décor for both the main house and guesthouse, were sourced from across the globe and shipped to the Cayman Islands via three large shipping containers. Janus gave great attention to honoring the authenticity of the home without creating a dated feel. The finishes were selected to reflect a young and active multi-generational family.
